What is SECP?
The Self-Employed Creative Professionals (SECP) is a special interest
group of the OCIABC, designed to foster camaraderie and support
for independent contractors who create advertising, promotional,
sales and other marketing materials.

History of SECP
SECP was founded in 1997 as a special interest group of the Oregon
Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators
(OCIABC). The SECP strives to foster a collegial, welcoming atmosphere
for all those interested in the pursuit of independent creative
business.
The group was formed in response to the increasing number of independent creative professionals, aka "freelancers," in the Portland area -- estimated by the Portland Development Commission to be about 2,400. The group includes independent contractors who contribute design, illustration, writing, editing, video, Web content, public relations and a variety of other marketing and creative services to clients in Oregon and nationwide.
A core group of about 250 creatives receives meeting notices and updates of workshops, job opportunities and other creative industry news. The organization maintains a "hot sheet" of who's who in the group, which is used in response to inquiries from businesses needing creative talent. A key element of monthly meetings is the opportunity to meet and greet fellow independent contractors. Meet with other creative professionals -- check SECP out for yourself!
